Buckler's Hard
A short drive east along the coast from your accommodation at Elmers Court will see you arrive in the picturesque fishing village of Buckler’s Hard.
An eternally popular tourist attraction for those visiting or living on the Solent Coast, this former 18th century dwelling is a fantastic, nautically themed day out featuring a wealth of top attractions: Buckler’s Hard Museum, Shipwright’s Cottage and plenty of events for kids to enjoy during the summer and selected school holidays.
Peaceful Coastal Haven
Start your day on the dreamy banks of Beaulieu River as you walk towards the water and the myriad activities found there. Step back in time to the 1700s as you journey through a largely unchanged environment and former shipbuilding hub which once provided for Nelson’s fleet at the battle of Trafalgar - now existing as an endearing escape from the busyness of life.
There’s something delightfully rustic and quintessential about the way of life here, becoming increasingly apparent as you admire the apple orchard – in full bloom during the spring months – which forms part of the apple haul from orchards linked to the wider Beaulieu Estate along the river, which combine to make the refreshing local apple juice.
Buckler's Hard Museum
With access to the village itself free of charge, you will only have to part with a small fee for the upkeep of the location as a prominent heritage site should you wish to enter Buckler’s Hard Museum or join a River Cruise.
The museum itself showcases the unique history of Buckler’s Hard, including its origins as a port for the trading of sugar, before it swiftly established itself as a naval shipbuilding centre contributing to Nelson’s fleets during battle.
Rare artefacts including clothes Nelson wore as a child are on display, while creative cottage displays help depict how villages lived and worked during the 1800s - with the shipwright’s expansive cottage in comparison to the claustrophobic conditions labourers were given as a stark example of the rich and poor divide during the period.
River Cruises
When visiting Elmers Court between Easter and October, take to the water and a river cruise along the scenic Beaulieu River for a different vantage point of this appealing corner of England.
Step aboard for a 30-minute journey along one of the few rivers to be privately owned anywhere in the world, with regular sailing times available from the jetty during the day making it a great addition to walking tours around Buckler’s Hard or a pleasant stop-off en-route to Beaulieu Estate and the famous Beaulieu Motor Museum.
What’s more, you’ll also be privy to engaging commentary throughout your cruise, revealing more about the history of the river and the birds and wildlife calling the riverbanks their home.
