Things To Do in Stratford-Upon-Avon

Stratford upon Avon is a thriving market town in its own right and less than 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel. Discover the best attractions and things to do in the local area.

The River Avon has a real presence, not least because of its much-photographed inhabitants – the swans – and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, which occupies a prime spot on the riverbank. The town is also linked by the Stratford upon Avon Canal and the Bancroft Basin is its hub, right in the centre between the shopping area and the theatres. It’s the perfect place to get your bearings, admire the beautiful gardens and enjoy the buzz generated by floating markets and boats galore.

Not surprisingly, this is also where you can embark upon a river tour, with Canal and River Tours covering both watery highways. Enjoy a swan’s eye view as you glide past Stratford’s sights and experience a working lock during your 45-minute trip. If you prefer, pick up a rowing boat which you can hire by the hour. They’re each named after a different Shakespeare character so choose your favourite for inspiration on the water!

Alternatively, try a guided walking tour with Walk Talk Show - 90-minutes around the landmarks and locations that make Stratford such a colourful historic location.

Stratford Butterfly Farm

If you’re looking for something completely different to entertain the family, the Stratford Butterfly Farm is the ideal distraction, especially as a wet-weather activity. Just five minutes’ walk from the hotel, you’ll find a rainforest paradise where the world’s most spectacular butterflies can be seen flying around in a colourful tropical greenhouse. There lots to learn about their lives, plus a host of other slightly less attractive but equally fascinating exhibits too!

There are many lovely walks in the local area if you prefer to stride out on your own or, if you’re looking for proper countryside and incredible views without having to drive for miles, head for the Welcombe Hills – 6 minutes by car, or just over half an hour’s walk. Combined with Clopton Park, a former medieval deer park, this is a wonderful local nature reserve where you can roam through grassland and woodland, enjoy a picnic and look out for numerous bird species that inhabit the area.
