Kayaking at Brockhole

Brockhole On Windermere Near Old England Hotel

When you’re planning your itinerary, make sure a visit to Brockhole on Windermere is high on your list. Less than 10 minutes’ drive from the hotel it’s a venue that’s full to the brim with action-packed activities – in the treetops, on the water, or deep inside a cave!

Here, you’ll find the perfect opportunity to try something new, whether that’s archery, laser clay shooting, treetop trekking, kayaking and much more. There’s a wonderful woodland playground, an indoor play area and ‘Brave the Cave’ - the chance to dig deep for adventure on a 45-minute journey into Brockhole’s caving tunnels.

For those who don’t crave an adrenalin-fuelled day, the historic house and fabulous grounds are an elegant antidote to the shrieks of excitement in the air. Brockhole is the site of the Lake District National Park Authority Visitor Centre, occupying the house built by wealthy Manchester silk merchant William Gaddum in the late 19th century. Beatrix Potter was a regular guest and visitors today can enjoy the same spectacular views of Lake Windermere and the idyllic countryside, and roam 30 acres of stunning gardens designed by landscape architect Thomas Mawson.

Once you’ve built up an appetite, try the on-site café or The Gaddum restaurant, with ingredients from Kitchen Garden regularly featuring on menus.

There are so many options to choose from – even in wet weather – and there’s something to appeal to all ages. What’s more, all profits go towards keeping Brockhole special for future generations – a wonderful legacy that should make your day even more enjoyable.
