Lake Windermere to Host UK's First Sustainable Powerboat Race

Want to be wowed by a day of watersports? Well, the Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club has announced the UK's first ever sustainable powerboat race.
Taking place on Lake Windermere on Saturday 20th April 2024, the event will feature all the spectacular aquatic action you'd expect from powerboat racing, but there's an environmentally-friendly twist: all the boats will be running on sustainable fuel.
You'll be able to witness this pioneering powerboating while staying at Macdonald Old England Hotel, one of our luxury Lake District retreats, which offers breathtaking views of the local landscape, exceptional facilities, and trademark dining.
THE RACE
For one day only, up to 20 petrol-engined powerboats will take part in five races up and down Lake Windermere. Instead of fossil fuels, the boats will be making a splash using SUSTAIN Super 80 - a sustainable fuel which takes its carbon from agricultural and forestry waste. This waste would otherwise end up in landfill and produce methane, one of the emissions most responsible for global warming.
In addition, spectators can expect an electrifying catamaran race, as one sustainably-fuelled catamaran takes on another powered by the battery from a Nissan Leaf.
Run by the Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club - one of the oldest clubs of its kind in the world - and supported by the Lake District National Park Authority, the race day promises waves of excitement for competitors and spectators alike.
