HISTORIC SCOTLAND

Unsurprisingly, this area of Scotland is full of history and two contrasting but equally fascinating castles are well worth a visit, with the journey to both taking less than 45 minutes by car from Forest Hills Hotel & Resort.

Doune Castle

One of the most complete medieval castles still standing in Scotland - is rugged and full of character, with a wonderfully preserved great hall as well as an impressive 100ft high gatehouse. It is a labyrinth of rooms connected by spiral staircases and narrow doorways and great fun to explore. Don’t leave without touring the grounds, which include a woodland walk and the site of a Roman fort.

Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle is quite magnificent - an iconic royal palace and a focal point for many of the most significant events in Scotland’s history. Its imposing position and impressive architecture help make it one of Scotland’s grandest castles and as a royal residence, it is often regarded as important as Edinburgh Castle. The Great Hall has now been restored to the glory of its early 16th-century heyday - including its hammer-beam ceiling - and parts of the Palace interior have been beautifully refurbished in the style of the mid-16th century.
